Chapter 17

Brothers at War

SABINE

“He's your brother? Oh, now that is awkward,” I muttered.

To think I had actually been enjoying the elusive yet mysterious Laurence's company, and now I felt quite the guilt trip coming on. Wow, Tristan has a brother. Who'd have thought it? I never would have guessed that one, but Laurence is so much more laid back than Tristan. No. It's not possible, I thought to myself. I couldn't believe how stupid I had been to not notice that, especially with all the information he had been sending my way regarding Tristan. He clearly didn't have much love for his brother, but then again, most families were complicated.

“Yes. I have a brother. I also have a mother and a father... somewhere,” Tristan trailed off as he eyed me skeptically. He didn't have much time to come up with that answer, but he was awfully intimidated by Laurence, which made me wonder if there was bad blood between them, and I didn't just mean the obvious. There was no doubt in my mind that Laurence was a vampire too. He had to be, but the interesting thing was there was so much resentment lingering between these two you really had to question why. Surely families are tight-knit and loving, but not in this case as it remained to be seen, I consulted myself in my thoughts as this situation became more awkward by the moment. The sensible thing would be to just leave with Tristan and get gone. I agreed there was no need for me to be here, and I didn't need to be caught up in a brotherly war of sorts. I didn't need that added stress on top of everything else, even if I did find Laurence attractive.

“Uh uh,” I muttered, looking aimlessly at Laurence, who stood smirking at me from behind the bar. He clearly enjoyed this masculine power play, judging by how he looked like the cat who had gotten the cream. I wished I had another drink in my hand as a way of attempting to look busy, but alas, that was not to be.

“Anyway, we should go, Sabine,” Tristan urged me in a strong tone. “I haven't got time for this juvenile nonsense.” He stared right at Laurence, which again caused me to think. Oh boy, he's really got it in for his brother. The goading and harsh attitude are detectable for miles. I wonder what has Tristan so bent out of shape about Laurence? Maybe it's some kind of manly battle of wits thing like maybe Laurence is better suited for the vampire lifestyle than Laurence, and it bugs the crap out of him. Oh, who knows. We gotta go, though. Tristan is right about that.

“Yeah, all right,” I relented, proceeding to lift myself off of the barstool only to feel a little unsteady on my feet. I latched onto the side of the bar only for Tristan to notice and immediately stand me up, holding onto both of my arms. I tried to push him away, but he insisted on holding me up.
